Wildlife officials are investigating after three sharks were found along a stretch of the Tennessee River from Decatur County to Humphreys County.

The sharks, all of which were dead, were found within the last week near three different boat ramps along the riverbank.

The TWRA said the first was found last week in Decatur County, the second Monday night in New Johnsonville and third Tuesday morning in Decatur County.

All three of the sharks were about 14 inches long and appear to be the same type.

TWRA Asst. Chief of Fisheries Bobby Wilson said, “We’ve contacted folks that know more about saltwater fish than we do, and they think it is either a Finetooth shark or a Blacknose shark. Neither could tolerate fresh water at all.”

The TWRA said they are investigating the discovery of the sharks as a prank due to their proximity to the boat ramps.

“We think it is just a big practical joke that somebody caught them possibly down in the gulf over the last week or so, thought they would just bring back up here, put them near some of the boat ramps where somebody would likely find them,” Wilson said.

The TWRA doesn’t believe the sharks were put into the water alive, but if that is the case the person responsible for doing that could face charges.

“If they were dead,” Wilson said, “it’s different. They are not supposed to do it, but if they were alive, definitely, they would be in big, big time trouble.”

This isn’t the first time the TWRA has found a species that isn’t native to Tennessee waters.

They say Asian, or Silver Carp have been spotted on the Cumberland River, in and around Cheatham County.

They are an invasive species of fish that can jump as high as 10 feet into the air.

The TWRA says they can injure boaters and fishermen and even threaten wildlife.

A Mississippi lesbian Tuesday won a judge’s backing for her contention that her First Amendment rights were violated when her high school refused to allow her to attend her prom with her girlfriend.

But U.S. District Judge Glen H. Davidson refused to order the Itawamba County School District in Fulton, Mississippi, to hold the dance it had canceled over the matter.

In his 12-page order, Davidson also ruled that Itawamba Agricultural High School’s denial of 18-year-old Constance McMillen’s request to wear a tuxedo to her prom was a violation of her rights.

“The record shows Constance has been openly gay since eighth grade and she intended to communicate a message by wearing a tuxedo and to express her identity through attending prom with a same-sex date,” Davidson wrote.

“The court finds this expression and communication of her viewpoint is the type of speech that falls squarely within the purview of the First Amendment.”

When school officials told McMillen she could neither take her girlfriend to the prom nor wear a tuxedo to the event, the senior went to the American Civil Liberties Union, which demanded the school change its policy. In response, the school district canceled the prom altogether.

To see the world through Greg Taylor’s eyes, imagine being stuck in a time machine for 16 years and delivered to 2010.

Facebook, flat screens and DVDs are all new to him. Relationships that used to come with natural ease seem awkward.

Since 1993, Taylor, now 47, had been locked away in North Carolina’s prison system for the murder of a prostitute. Last month, he was exonerated and freed.

“All that frustration and confusion I had stored up all those years was just let out,” Taylor said, recalling the day he was released, February 17. “There was a lot of relief and gratitude. There was a whole lot to get used to.”

He agreed to jot down his impressions and share them with CNN.

After a month readjusting to life outside prison, Taylor has concluded that Facebook is “neat but a waste of time.” He’s in awe that a flat, round disk called a DVD lets him rewind and fast-forward movies by just pushing a button. He finds the automatic soap dispensers in the mall bathrooms startling.

The latest trend at teen parties isn’t warm beer or prescription medicines pilfered from parents’ medicine cabinets. Instead, increasing numbers of youths are turning to an herb-based product to get high, and unlike marijuana, it’s perfectly legal.

It’s known as K2 or Spice, a synthetic substance that, when smoked, gives users a marijuana-like high, according to drug authorities. Its growing popularity is causing increasing alarm among health care professionals, law enforcement authorities and lawmakers, with one Drug Enforcement Agency official calling its use the equivalent of “playing Russian roulette.”

Hundreds of people were evacuated Sunday amid flood concerns after a long-dormant volcano erupted beneath a glacier in south Iceland.

It was the first time since 1821 that the volcano under the Eyjafjallajokull glacier has erupted.

More than 600 people were evacuated as scientists monitored a fissure in the volcano from which lava was erupting. The fissure measured about 1,640 to 3,281 feet (500 to 1,000 meters).

Despite the remote location of the eruption, if the fissure “develops further towards the glacier, the melting floodwater … will create dangerous floods in a populated area in south Iceland,” said Gudrun Johannesdottir, a project manager for Iceland’s Joint Rescue and Coordination Center.

The country’s civil protection agency did not immediately record any injuries or damage.

Eyjafjallajokull is about 100 miles (160 kilometers) east of the capital, Reykjavik.

Police in New Jersey arrested a teenager in connection with a public-address-system announcement telling “all blacks” to leave a Wal-Mart store, a police spokesman said.

The 16-year-old boy is from Atlantic County, New Jersey, said deputy police chief John Dalesandro of the Washington Township Police Department. The suspect was arrested Friday in Atlantic County on bias intimidation and harassment charges, police said in a statement Saturday. He is in custody of his parents, police said.

Gloucester County prosecutors say that shortly before 5 p.m. on March 14, an unidentified male accessed the public address system at the Turnersville, New Jersey, Wal-Mart Supercenter Store. “All blacks need to leave the store,” the voice announced. Store management contacted the Washington Township Police Department, which opened an investigation in conjunction with the county prosecutor’s office, Dalesandro said.

Wal-Mart corporate spokesman Lorenzo Lopez said the company is “just as appalled by this as anyone.”

He emphasized that Wal-Mart, the world’s largest public corporation, is working with law enforcement officials.

“Whoever did this is wrong and acted in an inappropriate manner,” Lopez said. “Clearly this is unacceptable.”

Law enforcement officials said that Wal-Mart is now acting to limit the public address feature to a smaller number of in-store telephones.

Lopez has confirmed that the New Jersey store is updating its intercom systems and that the company is looking at Sunday’s episode to see if there are any lessons for the retailer’s other 4,000-plus American stores.
